I get that question often. Asked in many different ways, Brides want to know how much they should spend in wedding photography. The short answer? You should get the best photographer you can afford. But he problem with that is that often, Brides do not know how much a photographer is worth.
See that I said “is worth” and not “how much it cost”. “It is worth” implies that wedding photography has great inherent value while “how much it cost” implies how cheap I can get it for. When you look at wedding photographers you cannot think like “Walmart”.
Sometimes I see brides that spend more money on a wedding cake or gown than in wedding photography. Yet, the cake and gown are just for one night and the wedding photography for the rest of their lives. Wedding cake, the venue, the gown, shoes, all those things are very important as they set the tone of the event, but at the end of the day, what will you have to remember all those things?
Of all the wedding vendors the wedding photographer decision is the most crucial one because is the one in charge of capturing the memories you will have of your wedding day 10, 15, 20 years from now.
When you select a wedding photographer you are not selecting a “trained monkey” to just press the shutter release of the camera in pre determined moments of a protocol. You should be searching for someone that has an artistic eye and an incredible sense of timing to be in the right place at the right time. You need to choose carefully because a good wedding photographer will interpret your event through his/her artistic sensibility, using all his technical knowledge to create beautiful images that will preserve your wedding day moments and transform them into beautiful memories.
Consider also that a good wedding photographer will spend long hours of post processing working on your images, refining them, to make them beautiful interpretations of your memories.
Then, consider how you will present those images. The printing process as well as the wedding book are very important because both will determine how well are your memories preserved through time and if your wedding album becomes a heirloom or not. Unfortunately, now days some photographers are using cheap options just to make a better profit. While that may be an “acceptable” business practice, it is not in your best interest.
